Hi, I'm Jen! I have been practicing Physical Therapy for 23+ years in various outpatient ortho settings both locally and abroad. I received my Masters of Physical Therapy at University of Washington (2001) and am trained in various movement and neuro informed diagnostic and manual therapy techniques including Myofascial Release (MFR), Muscle Energy Technique (MET), Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA), Craniosacral Therapy (CST), Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT), Myokinesthetic System (MYK), Fascial Counterstrain (FCS) and traditional Strain Counterstrain (SCS), as well as gentle scar and visceral work.
I also have a Masters of Pastoral Studies (Multnomah University, 2005) and extensive experience dealing in helping people address different emotional, mental, spiritual and physical roadblocks to growth, healing and wellness, especially as it relates to the impact and expression of different types of trauma and stress.
My approach integrates and draws from both a medical, ministry, and soul-care background to be able to more holistically treat people and their pain.
I also like to eat, chase waterfalls, explore the outdoors, take random photos which you'll see throughout this site, and get to know people and their stories.
I hope to get the chance to know and work with YOU one day :)
One of the joys of my skillset and training is being able to meet and serve others who may not normally have access to medical care.
Working with orphans, refugees, villagers and others rescued from trafficking has been deeply humbling and full of jarring reminders of what we may read in the news, but they experience on a daily basis. Many times I feel like I come away with way more than I could ever give, but this is absolutely something I hope to be able to continue to do in the future as opportunity allows!
A short story.
The boy on the right was the highlight of one of my trips! The moment I saw him, I couldn't take my eyes off him. His ankles collapsed as he struggled to move due to an issue he was born with. Despite having 5 surgeries on his head, and various others on his stomach, back, ankles, etc., he was so sweet and calm. During his last surgery, the doctor accidentally cut his lower nerves so he lost motor control of his lower legs, feet, and other body functions. He was only 11.
For over an hour, I worked on his head, abdomen, and lower back because of all the scars from his surgeries. As his cranial bone mobility was restored, his body started to loosen up and his sacrum "clunked" back into place...
Afterwards, we rechecked things and found that he had more control of his legs and his foot could move a little more.
Sadly, I didn't have more time to spend with him, but to finish, I asked him if he had a prayer request. He said he wanted his legs to get better. I thought to myself - how could God not answer that???
( A little side note that if you are not a person of faith, I hope this does not offend you... just sharing what happened and one of my many experiences and joys of working in this profession. )So we laid hands on him, prayed over his atrophied legs, and then...
the boy was able to stand up and walk down the hall and back via prayer and some help. Instead of using his arms via crutches, he was able to weightbear more through his feet, and his ankles got stronger the more he walked and we prayed. Oh my heart...
Stories like these encapsulate why I feel so honored to be able to come alongside others to help with what I can and bless and release what I can't. I think about him and the people I've met and work with often and hope they continue to do better!
